How to Sage

One of the questions we get asked the most is how do I sage? Below is the method we use and recommend for saging a home or space. As you continue working with the sage, you will probably develop your own method and that is okay! Our method is not the “right way” just “a way” of clearing, cleansing, and resetting your space.

You can also sage yourself to cleanse your energetic body and we will do another post about that!

Here is our saging method for cleansing your space:

  1. Gather your tools. Get your sage, a lighter, an abalone shell or something to put the sage in while it's hot, and a feather/feather fan if you have one (optional).

  2. Ask for consent. Check in with your sage. Connect with the sage and ask if you can work with the plant to clear your space. If you get a no, honor that. You can try again another time. Do the same with your space.

  3. If you get a yes, set an intention. Tune into your heart and body. This intention can be as simple as “My intention is to cleanse my space of any energy that no longer serves me” or as complex as an intention specific to what you are working on in your inner world. Say your intention out loud, visualize it in your mind's eye, or say it in your head.

  4. Start the saging process by opening a window or door. This creates a pathway for the energy you are clearing to exit your space.

  5. Go to your front door and light the sage there. Have your shell or a bowl with you to catch any embers or put the sage in if needed.

  6. With your sage, walk clockwise following the outer walls of your space. We do the whole space at one time as opposed to going room to room. This helps with continuity and clears everything at once.

  7. Work your way toward the center of the room, moving in a clockwise spiral.

  8. Once you reach the center, restate your intention and ask for any residual energy to be cleared in the vibration of love, the Divine, etc.

  9. Check and see if the energy feels complete. If so, you can put the sage out. If not, leave the sage burning in a safe place inside a shell or fire safe bowl until it naturally puts itself out.

  10. Thank the sage and your space and any being that might have come through to help you.

  11. Depending on what feels right for you, you can reuse what’s left of the sage stick if there’s any left or you can return it to the Earth by burying it. If you bury it, offer the sage, and the Earth a blessing.

White sage is one of the most common sages to use but there are lots of different varieties of sage and smudging bundles that are great for different intentions. You can shop different varieties for different intentions in store or online here

Happy saging and thank you for allowing yourself to be Guided by the Omans!
